Temporary Accommodation and 'Hidden Homelessness' of Women

Analysis by London Councils reveals almost double the number of homeless women than men are in temporary accommodation arranged by a borough in the capital.

Based on government figures, the research shows 42,000 occupants of temporary accommodation in London are female adults compared to 21,700 male adults – meaning 65% of adult occupants are women.

London Councils’ Executive Member for Housing & Planning, Cllr Darren Rodwell, said: “The specific challenges around women’s homelessness are too often overlooked. We’re hugely concerned by the number of women becoming homeless and requiring temporary accommodation in the capital.

“London continues to suffer the highest homelessness rates in the country – especially in terms of the hidden homelessness identified through temporary accommodation figures. More must be done to understand the particularly severe impact on female Londoners and to help them avoid homelessness.”

London Boroughs Women's Network launched

The London Boroughs Women's Network officially launched on Monday (7 March), ahead of International Women's Day 2022.

The network, a collaboration between all 32 London boroughs and the City of London Corporation, has been created to amplify the voices of all women in London local authorities and co-ordinate action.

Three borough chief executives, Will Tuckley, (Tower Hamlets), Jenny Rowlands, (Camden) and Helen Bailey (Sutton) have all agreed all agreed co-sponsor the network. Read more  in the press release here.

International Women's Day 2022

London Councils' Group Leaders, Cllr Georgia Gould (Chair and Leader, LB Camden); Cllr Teresa O'Neill (Vice Chair and Leader, LB Bexley), Cllr Ruth Dombey (Vice Chair and Leader, LB Sutton and Catherine McGuinness, (Vice Chair and Chair of Policy and Resources Committee, City of London) yesterday issued a joint statement of support to mark International Women's Day:

“On International Women’s Day 2022, we voice our support for women in our communities and reaffirm London boroughs’ commitment to achieving gender equality in our city.

“As borough Leaders at the forefront of our respective political groups and City of London Corporation Policy Chair, we are proud to be leading London local government. However we recognise that bias, discrimination and stereotyping remains a significant barrier to women realising their full potential.

“40% of London’s councillors were women following the borough elections in 2018 and political parties have been working hard to see female representation increase in the upcoming elections.”
