Let's Make Herstory!

Did you know President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th, 1980 as National Women's History Week?

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified granting American female citizens the right to vote. The press and suffragists were NOT invited to the signing ceremony!

The North Carolina League of Women Voters ran a 1920 advertisement with this message still pertinent today:
"Women have proven themselves patriotic citizens in the past. They have answered every call to civic service. They will contribute their best to the State and Nation now by using their vote for better government."

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of black women voter leagues, black women in most southern states faced literacy tests, property tax requirements, and other hurdles when they tried to register to vote. The struggle continues and we must unite to protect access to the vote and vote in every election!

Support the next generation at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Parent Lunch & Learn: Books to Empower Young Girls – an online event appropriate for children 0 - 11 years from noon to 1 pm tomorrow: Wednesday, March 9, 2022. Click here to register by 9 AM Wednesday morning. I plan to participate with my daughter Charlotte.
