This morning we shared some terrible news: the Florida legislature passed a regressive 'Don't Say Gay' bill, aimed at erasing LGBTQ lives and students from schools.
But while bigoted legislators in Tallahassee were trying to silence us, voters were making their voices heard at the ballot box. And with resounding enthusiasm, they chose equality. I'm thrilled to share that Ty Penserga won the Boynton Beach mayoral election ! Ty is now the first out LGBTQ mayor ever elected in Boynton Beach AND the first out LGBTQ AAPI mayor elected in Florida !
Ty also defeated an anti-LGBTQ opponent who claimed Ty wasn't "a real man", along with other bigoted and anti-Asian statements. Right now, there are only three out LGBTQ mayors in Florida: Jane Castor in Tampa, Teri Johnston in Key West, and Dean Trantalis in Fort Lauderdale. And we know that together with Ty and our LGBTQ state legislative leaders, they'll keep fighting back against any horrific bill that Ron DeSantis and other anti-LGBTQ forces pass.
