Happy International Women’s Day,
John.
Today, I hope all of us can share our love for the women who make our
lives better and do so much to support our families, communities, and
movement for bold, progressive change. 💗
But this International Women’s Day, it’s impossible to celebrate without
recognizing the historic struggles women in our country are enduring right
now.
We’re currently witnessing the worst attacks on abortion access in our
lifetime. Every day, Black mothers, birthing people, and babies die
because our doctors don’t believe our pain. Too many mamas are losing
their Black children to police violence. Too many women are at risk of
becoming unhoused and living on the streets. I know how critical these
issues are because I’ve lived through them — I know what it’s like to be
scared of becoming another statistic.
Our politicians promised meaningful change, relief, and protections for
the women who voted and delivered Democratic majorities in Congress. Now,
it is our duty to legislate for them. It’s a promise I take
seriously, John.
That’s why I testified in front of Congress to share why I chose to have
an abortion after I was sexually assaulted at the age of 17 and urged our
leaders to protect Roe v. Wade.
That’s why I voted to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and Violence
Against Women Act.
That’s why I introduced the People’s Response Act and have been pushing
Congress to transform public safety so we can end the cycle of police
violence in our communities.
And that’s why I’m running for re-election in 2022 so we can continue
speaking out about the critical challenges too many women and marginalized
groups are enduring today in America.
So today I want to ask you two favors: I hope that today you tell the
women in your life how much you appreciate them. [ [link removed] ]And if you’re able, I
hope you’ll chip in $5 or whatever you can to help power
our organizing efforts to address the crises women in our country face
right now.
