This March, we are celebrating International Women’s Month. As a professional woman spending her career in male dominated work, I longed for the times when I would feel equal and respected for my opinions and advice in every work setting.
It took me quite a while working as a nurse, then student, lawyer and humanitarian worker to find such a colleague. “Let me Speak” an “I am Speaking” were my defensive go-to phrases when I needed to express my opinions in work settings.
During that time I grew, and yes, aged, and accumulated a great amount of experience and wisdom.
One bit of wisdom I’ve learned is that you don’t have to be a woman to advocate for women. You don’t have to look like me or have faced the unique challenges I have faced. Rather, a true advocate for the advancement of women is someone who listens, who appreciates that we have something to say.
Friend and colleague, Dave Harden, running for Congress in Maryland’s First District, is one of those people.
We both are graduates of Georgetown University Law Center selected for their Public Interest Scholar Program dedicated to giving lawyers the tools to do public and humanitarian work which we both have done in our careers.
I have had the pleasure to work with Dave on Middle East humanitarian and economic projects, as well as working side by side with him in a cross border Middle East business. During those times we worked together to solve many problems by harnessing private and public funding to create jobs for workers. First and foremost, Dave is a problem solver. No issue too challenging or complex for Mr. Harden. And, most importantly, Dave let’s everyone speak.
The years ahead require that all people regardless of gender, heritage, or opinions listen to each other. Dave Harden has always wanted to hear all voices and all points of view. Maryland’s First District is home to a diverse range of men and women, some operating small businesses, some working farms that have been in their families for multiple generations and others practicing the time-honored customs and traditions of the Chesapeake Bay watermen.
Join with Dave in his local discussions and meetings. You will notice what I have noticed – that he listens and will make real plans to solve problems for your District.
Wishing you the best,
Joyce
