Subject: Women belong in the House and Senate
John – The first time I heard of Brand New Congress was the day they called me and asked me to run for a seat in the U.S. House.
I never expected to be a politician, but I accepted the challenge and proudly joined the slate as one of the very first BNC candidates – the original slate.
BNC’s mission is right there in our name: We want to elect a brand new Congress. A congress that looks like America and represents the full spectrum of the American experience. Because representation matters.
We see that playing out right now. Just last week a bill to codify the right to an abortion was blocked by a wealthy, white male Senator – Joe Manchin.
There may be a “record number” of women serving in Congress right now – but the problem is that number is 27%.
Despite representing more than 50% of the U.S. population, we hold barely a quarter of the seats in Congress. BNC is going to change that.
Each year the majority of the BNC slate has been made up of women, and this year that number is higher than ever at 76%.
Four of our five elected members are women – all of them women of color – and we are going to add to that number in 2022.
