Ohio has been home to countless trailblazing women.
There's Florence E. Allen, the first woman to serve as an assistant county prosecutor, the first woman on a state Supreme Court, and the first woman to be appointed to a federal appeals judgeship.
There's Toni Morrison, acclaimed author whose books addressed the truth and consequences of racism in America.
And Judith Resnik, from my hometown of Akron, who was the second woman to go into space, and tragically lost her life in the Challenger explosion of 1986.
Today there are women like Joyce Beatty, Shontel Brown, and Marcy Kaptur who are fighting for everyday Ohioans in Congress. And we can't forget Marcia Fudge, who serves as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
All of these women are an inspiration to myself and women across the state -- and country. Today on International Women's Day we should celebrate their accomplishments and look at the work they've done to break barriers in our country.
I want to issue a challenge to everyone on this day: think about the influential women who have shaped your lives and goals and find a way to honor them today.
