Here&rsquo;s How 2021 Federal Legislation Supports Nursing
In response to the pandemic, Congress last year approved additional funds for health care, a good deal of it meant to bolster the nation&rsquo;s health by strengthening the nursing workforce. The Campaign has analyzed multiple pieces of legislation that are, and potentially will, affect nurses and further the goals of the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report.

National Health Service Corps Celebrates 50th
The National Health Service Corps, begun in 1970 by The Emergency Health Personnel Act of 1970 and two years later placed the first clinicians in 20 communities in 13 states. The NHSC has since sent more than 66,000 clinicians to improve health outcomes for millions. Now, 50 years later, it invites those touched by the NHSC to help to honor those accomplishments.

Guidebook Shows How To Think, Talk About Complex Care
&ldquo;The language and messages used to describe complex care have evolved continuously over the last decade,&rdquo; reads the introduction to a new guide that&rsquo;s meant to unify those changing ideas to provide a strong, consistent message. The Camden Coalition and the Center for Health Care Strategies gathered observations and definitions from all involved to create the guide.

Eliminate Disparities in Health: 8 Principles Guide the Way
&ldquo;We see every day the toll health care disparities take on people,&rdquo; says the co-chair of a health equity committee that has created eight principles to take those on disparities. The Kentucky Nurses Association, Kentuckiana Health Collaborative, and Have a Heart Clinic together wrote Principles of Advancing Healthcare Equity in Greater Louisville, which also includes ways to implement the principles.

New - CDC Seeks Experts for New Health Equity Workgroup
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention invites applications for membership in its new Health Equity Workgroup. The advisory committee will include experts in fields associated with health equity, and is designed to advise the secretary of Health and Human Services and the director of the CDC on policy and broad strategies. Deadline: March 17.

Share your findings at the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs&rsquo; annual conference in September by presenting at a workshop or during a Beehive (the center&rsquo;s networking sessions). The Interdisciplinary Research Leaders, a three-year leadership development program, aims to support action-oriented research collaborations with the goal of dismantling structural racism and advancing health equity. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation opens its 2022 application process to teams (two researchers and one community partner) from a diversity of disciplines. Deadline May 4.

AAN Updates Fellowship Application Process
The American Academy of Nursing has streamlined and modernized its application process for fellows, including implementing steps to eliminate unconscious bias, and has opened the 2022 Fellowship Application cycle. Deadline: March 10.

Harold Amos Diversity Program Funds Postdoctoral Research
Nurses, physicians, and dentists from historically marginalized backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program, offered by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program offers four-year postdoctoral research awards, and scholars should be committed to working toward eliminating health disparities by achieving senior rank. Deadline: March 16.

Health Research Scholarships Open to Those From Many Fields
Doctoral students who want to apply their research in ways that advance health equity are urged to apply to become a Health Policy Research Scholar&mdash;and that includes students from multiple disciplines, be it economics, engineering, agriculture, or others. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation offers this leadership opportunity to those from historically underrepresented populations. Deadline: March 16.

AARP Challenge: Make Your Community More Livable
Have an idea for how to make your neighborhood more livable for all? This year&rsquo;s AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to fund projects to improve public spaces, housing, transportation, and civic engagement; support diversity, equity and inclusion; and pursue innovative ideas that support people 50 or older. The Federal Emergency Management Agency seeks professionals from all backgrounds and communities to apply for its National Advisory Council. These 35 members advise on all aspects of emergency management, helping coordinate with state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, as well as the private and nonprofit sectors.
