Folks,

Today is International Women’s Day. I’m reflecting on the inspirational power
and dedication women have day in and day out all around me. It is almost
impossible to fully appreciate just how many leaders, artists, community
advocates, and change-makers have made a difference in my life.

Maria Gonzalez comes to mind as I reflect on the work she’s done for the
Minority Office of Colorado. She’s served as a local representative as well as
founded the Adelante Community Development nonprofit that supports Latino
families and small businesses in Colorado. Because of her work, more women in
Colorado will have a shot at the American Dream.

This international women’s day, I think of all the women in Colorado’s history
who have gone on to make an impact in the world and have shattered glass
ceilings. I’m thinking of community activists like Lucille Echohawk, a citizen
of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, public servants like US Secretary of State,
Madeleine Albright; and entertainers like Hattie McDaniel. All paved the way
for girls and women to follow in their footsteps.

I am thinking of my mother, Virginia, who adopted me when I was five and
raised me in a multicultural household that taught me to embrace Hispanic,
Yaqui, and German-American traditions all at once.

Finally, I am always thinking about the love of my life, my wife Bernadette,
who has stood by me and supported me for 27 years. I am also thinking of our
daughter, Amber, who – no matter what I do in life – will always be my greatest
joy.

In Congress, I promise I will fiercely advocate on behalf of women in
Colorado and across the country – to ensureRoe v Wade is protected, to close
the gender pay gap, and to advocate for the protection of the health and safety
of women in the workforce.

Happy International Women’s Day.
