Folks,

For more than 150 years, Congress has failed to honor the valor and sacrifice of the 200,000 Black Americans who fought to successfully preserve the Union and end the institution of slavery in America. Now, we’re doing something about it.

I’m proud to have introduced legislation with Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to these brave soldiers and sailors, the highest honor that Congress can bestow.

These American heroes helped shape the future of our country and what it represents today.

Their sacrifice made my service in the United States Senate possible.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the Black men who served in the Navy and the regiment of the Union Army known as the United States Colored Troops, as well as the Black women who served as nurses, cooks, spies, and scouts for the Army and Navy.

From slavery to Jim Crow, our institutions of government have long excluded voices like mine. But with the support of this incredible grassroots team, today I’m serving as New Jersey’s first Black senator — and I want to do more to elevate those whose contributions and sacrifices have been too often left out when we tell the story of our country’s history.

It’s time we recognize these heroes for their brave sacrifices.
