John—
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Professor emerita of Early American History and Women’s Studies at Harvard University, is credited with coining the phrase “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”
I have often thought about this and wondered what it takes for a woman to shatter the ceiling, take the lead, and make history. Guts and grit is what it takes. And, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo has it in spades.
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo is a trailblazer. She is not afraid to go first and ruffle some feathers.
- Anna was the first woman to Chair the San Mateo County Democratic Party.
- Anna was one of the first elected officials to publicly embrace the Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee, an LGBTQI+ political organization founded in the early 1980’s.
- Anna was the first woman to win her Silicon Valley Congressional District.
- Anna is the first woman in the history of the US Congress to Chair the Health Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
Anna is an undaunted and experienced legislator who never gives up on fighting for what’s right.
She cosponsored and voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, and voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. She is the author of groundbreaking legislation including the Reconstructive Breast Surgery Benefits Act that requires insurance companies to cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery following a covered mastectomy, redefining reconstruction as a necessary surgery and not cosmetic elective surgery.
This Women’s History Month, I hope you join me in celebrating women leaders like Anna and putting “ladies first.”
Let’s elect women and put women’s issues first.
We are stronger together.
Thank you.
