Happy Women’s History Month! Women are critical to our progressive advancement in Congress, so to start our celebration this month, we’ll be highlighting three important women in the history of the United States House of Representatives!
Jeanette Rankin
Alice M. Robinson
Shirley Chisholm
In 1917, Jeanette Rankin became the first woman to serve in Congress. Still the only woman ever elected to Congress from Montana, Rankin was a lifelong pacifist who stood by her beliefs in the midst of World Wars I and II. Rankin was a women’s suffrage activist who lobbied for legislation to enfranchise women in Montana, New York, and North Dakota, and she introduced the legislation that would eventually become the 19th Amendment. Jeanette Rankin set a precedent for powerful women in Congress and broke down barriers for all of the women that have followed her.
In 1921, Alice M. Robinson made history as the first woman to preside over the House of Representatives. Robinson, the first woman elected to Congress from a southern state, was also an educator, social worker, and Native American rights activist. She also was the first woman to defeat an incumbent Congressman to win her seat.
Then in 1968, the legendary Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the House. Representing New York’s 12th district, she only hired women to work in her office and took special care to hire Black women specifically. She was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and a founding member of the National Women’s Political Caucus. In 1972, Chisholm became the first Black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States. Chisholm made historic strides for women and Black Americans in Congress.
This month, we honor the legacy of all the women in Congress who have come before us, and who work to make today’s record number of women in Congress possible.
