Elected lawmakers in every corner of the country are trying to strip away the most basic rights of transgender Americans. These include attempts to prosecute the parents of trans children simply for being supportive. Some state lawmakers want to ban schools from even talking about the LGBTQ+ community.
As a movement working to end gun violence, we have an obligation to fight against this hate. It enables and normalizes deadly violence against trans people—which is often armed with a gun. Learn more about how we're working to disarm hate.
Last year was the deadliest year for transgender people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on record. The vast majority of those murdered were shot and killed. More than half of them were Black trans women. It's likely there have been even more deaths that have gone unreported or victims who have been misgendered and not counted.
Homicides of trans and gender non-conforming people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico have been on the rise for the last several years. At the same time, lawmakers in states across the country have put forward record numbers of anti-trans bills along with dangerous gun bills. It creates an environment ripe for deadly gun violence fueled by hate.
I want to make it abundantly clear: This organization is committed to helping trans people and the entire LGBTQ+ community fight this hate. We cannot let this become the status quo. We believe that trans people deserve nothing less than to be able to thrive openly as themselves, no matter where they live.
We have a role to play in this fight. Learn more about how everyone can be involved in the fight to disarm hate.
Thank you for being a part of this movement.
