This week we are highlighting projects that are part of the Welcome Legal Alliance, a new national nonpartisan initiative that was created to connect thousands of Afghan evacuees to lawyers who can help find a legal path to build a future in the U.S.

Thousands of Afghan nationals are in the United States and need assistance with identifying available immigration relief, submitting asylum applications, and more. The Welcome Legal Alliance brings leading organizations in immigration law and advocacy together with firms and individual lawyers to meet this need.
There are already 18 Welcome Legal Alliance projects live on We The Action, and most projects include training and mentorship. Please consider volunteering for one of the projects below, or explore more on our Welcome Legal Alliance page:

Represent Afghan Asylum Applicants
Tahirih Justice Center
Take asylum cases for clients for full scope representation on asylum applications and immigration relief. Volunteers will be supported throughout the entire case by Tahirih mentor attorneys.

Legal Screening of Afghan Evacuees
Human Rights First
Help complete screenings to identify all viable forms of immigration relief for Afghan refugees. The screening form is accessed online and is intended to identify if the individual is eligible for immigration benefits.

Assist Afghan Asylum Applications- Training Provided
The Advocates for Human Rights
Represent Afghan evacuees in affirmative asylum applications, helping to prepare and submit their asylum application to USCIS, and possibly representing the client in the asylum interview.

Assist Afghan Parolee with Relief Application
U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants
Connect with a pre-screened Afghan parolee to assist them in filling out their application for relief or review an already-filled application and confirm no edits need to be made before the parolee files the application.

Legal Representation for Afghan Asylum Seekers
The Immigration Justice Campaign
Represent an individual in their applications for immigration relief, assisting with a personal affidavit of the primary applicant, a legal brief, supporting documentation, and country condition evidence. Mentorship, training materials, guides, samples, and general country conditions are provided.

Pro Se Asylum Workshop to Secure Client Permanent Status in US
International Rescue Committee
Attend the scheduled asylum workshop to meet with the client and assist them in filling out the Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. Training is provided.
