We are seeing a wave of horrific anti-trans legislation sweeping our nation – from Texas to Alabama to Florida and beyond – that serves no other purpose than to limit the rights of transgender and non-binary communities, and puts their lives in danger.

I want to take this moment to speak directly to each and every person in our LGBTQ+ community here in NYC: I will do everything in my power to ensure your rights and safety in our state and beyond.

This weekend, I stood with advocates in Staten Island to denounce the continued exclusion of queer organizations from the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. We called for an end to any public dollars going to a march that continues to discriminate against LGBTQ+ communities.

Thanks to many years of advocacy, New York City and State have strong human rights laws, most recently codified by the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act.

But those protections are only as strong as our collective action to identify, report, and speak out against exclusion and injustice.

NY Transgender Advocacy Group has incredible resources outlining those rights, as well as trainings on how allies can identify and report discrimination against trans/nonbinary folks. I urge you to check out their resources and trainings here.

It is incumbent on all of us to stand up for the safety and dignity of our neighbors.
