John, we have the chance to tell the Biden Administration to stop oil drilling in the Arctic by putting a stop to the destructive Willow project in Alaska. But we need to act fast.

Let's talk about ConocoPhillips' Willow project, John

The Willow project is a proposed oil drilling project about 36 miles from the mostly-Indigenous village of Nuiqsut in Alaska. If built, this project would include the construction of pipelines, roads, a processing facility, and up to 250 drilling wells. It could end up producing as much as 130,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak, and about 590 million barrels over 30 years.¹

It was rushed through the approval process in the Trump Administration's final days, only to be temporarily halted by a federal judge in August.

Before it was halted, however, President Biden defended and supported the Willow project, even though it's in clear opposition to his climate agenda.² That's unacceptable.

Now, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management has announced a 30-day public comment period on ConocoPhillips' Willow project.

We must make our voices heard to support communities on the frontlines of this fight and demand that the Biden Administration end this project once and for all.

We'll submit a list of all action takers to the official BLM comment website — but we only have until March 9 before the comment period closes. Which is why I have to ask:

Here at 350, we almost couldn't believe it when we saw that in order to ensure a solid drilling surface, ConocoPhillips has suggested installing giant chillers underground to combat the Arctic's rising temperatures.

Here's a radical idea: Let's just stop contributing to the climate crisis instead, and keep fossil fuels in the ground.

This is going to be a major test for the Biden Administration, and has the potential to severely impact Biden's credibility as a 'climate president.'

Because the truth is that the completion of the Willow project would not only result in the burning of another 590 million barrels of oil — as if that's not enough — but it would also drastically impact Indigenous communities' from increased pollution, wildlife degradation, the risk of violence, as well as pave the way for more drilling in the area.³

This is not up for debate. The Willow project must be stopped.
