John,

On this year’s International Women’s Day, I’m thinking about all the work
Congress must do to support and empower women—which doesn’t only benefit
women. Without women succeeding in our workforce, it’s impossible to have
a strong, stable, globally competitive economy. I’m always thinking about
what type of world I want my daughter, Betsy, to grow up and live in.

* We need paid leave so that people can take time off to care for a new
child or sick loved one.
* We need to make child care more affordable so that women can rejoin
the workforce—right now women’s workforce participation remains low
compared to just ten years ago.
* We need to focus on economic, tax, and job creation policies that will
support families, women, and single parents—not just the
ultra-wealthy.
* We need to protect a woman’s right to an abortion. It’s troubling that
my daughter's generation may have less rights than my generation or my
mother’s.

I’ll keep pushing Congress to pass legislation that will support
women—because we should always be thinking about the effect policies and
laws have on women.

Happy International Women’s Day!
