Hi Revealer,

Our new multipart series on reproductive rights aims to help the public understand how powerful forces, often hidden in plain sight, advance their own interests … and at whose expense.

The Reveal episode A Strike at the Heart of Roe examines the origins of the Texas “heartbeat bill,” SB 8 — how what was once a fringe idea, even within right-to-life circles, has twisted science, law and logic to push itself into the anti-abortion mainstream, and how Texas, the state that gave us Roe v. Wade, has become the center of the movement to destroy that ruling. It’s a story that involves 99 red balloons, “Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn,” a new definition of fetal viability and “zombie laws” that threaten far more than reproductive justice.

In May, we will turn to Florida, the last state in the South where abortion has been relatively accessible — though that could soon change, if Republican lawmakers have their way — and the increasing clinic protests and harassment that attempt to limit access for patients and providers. The intensifying threats in Florida, in which anti-abortion protesters have faced almost no consequences while patients have occasionally been arrested for trying to defend themselves, offer a glimpse of what is likely to happen in blue states that have been working to strengthen their abortion protections against a post-Roe future.

In late June, when the Supreme Court is expected to decide Roe’s fate, Reveal will weigh in with a third installment, pondering the repercussions of this landmark ruling. And we’ll continue to report on reproductive rights in the months that follow, as the fallout of the Supreme Court’s ruling becomes clearer.

This type of investigation isn’t easy, especially in a competitive news environment in the middle of a pandemic. Innovative journalism on reproductive rights requires deep knowledge in a range of issues — health, law, science, government, religion and culture — as well as cutting-edge reporting tools, new types of collaboration and old-fashioned persistence. At Reveal, we put in the time and care to do it right. This work also demands a great deal of money. As a nonprofit, we rely on your generosity.
