** Dunstable illegal tobacco traders caught out by sniffer dogs
------------------------------------------------------------

** Sniffer dogs Cooper and Ted helped Central Bedfordshire Council’s Trading Standards Team seize a quantity of illegal tobacco in two shops in Dunstable.

Fifteen premises across Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Leighton Buzzard and surrounding villages were visited by a test purchaser on February 24, and three sales of illegal tobacco were made.
These illegal sales were immediately followed up by a visit from Central Bedfordshire Council’s Trading Standards Team and Bedfordshire Police. Red Snapper, accompanied by the tobacco sniffer dog and handler from Wagtail, who provide detection dogs for the public sector, joined the operation.

Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, Councillor Ian Dalgarno, said: “We take the sale of illicit goods very seriously and being able to use a sniffer dog significantly increases our chances of finding and seizing illegally imported tobacco.”

** Cheshire East smokers urged to quit on No Smoking Day

** Smokers across Cheshire East are being urged to quit the habit on No Smoking Day (Wednesday 9 March), in a nationwide initiative to encourage smokers to give up for good.

Currently, over 40,000 adults still smoke in Cheshire East and the council is tackling this issue by providing help through One You Cheshire East, which provides expert support and advice about quitting the deadly habit.

Dr Matt Tyrer, director of public health at Cheshire East Council, said: “Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your physical health but also is proven to boost your mental health and wellbeing."

“Quitting can improve your mood, and help relieve stress, anxiety and depression. It can save you a lot of money as well."

“Giving up smoking completely may take several attempts, and that’s normal, but every time people quit smoking, they’re a step closer to success.”

Helen, a former smoker from Alderley Edge, said: “The benefit of joining the One You programme was the support I received. I simply couldn't have got through it without support and information I got, along with the expert knowledge from Karolina, my One You health coach.”

** YOURhealth service offering support to stub out habit during No Smoking Day
------------------------------------------------------------

** The YOURhealth service at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is supporting this year’s No Smoking Day (Wednesday, March 9) and wants residents in East Riding to know that there is support available to them.

A spokesperson said: “Smoking is the single greatest preventable cause of death in the world today. No matter how long you’ve smoked for or how many you smoke a day, your health will improve as soon as you quit.”

Natalie Belt, service manager at YOURhealth, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The start of the year can be difficult and with so many challenges to our normal routines, sometimes we just need to gain a new perspective, a sounding board or to simply speak to a welcome ear."

“Our YOURhealth service can provide this through their free one-to-one support, with advice and guidance from local Health Trainers to help you put your health first.”

** Singapore: Smoking banned at about 100 more sites from July and enforcement to begin in October
------------------------------------------------------------

** From 1 July 2022, Singapore will ban smoking at three new types of premises, although enforcement will start in October to give smokers time to adjust. From 1 October, offenders will face a fine of S$200 or up to S$1,000 if convicted in court.

Smoking will be prohibited at all public parks and gardens and 10 recreational beaches, said the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and several statutory boards in a joint release issued on Monday 7 March.

Together, they cover about 100 sites such as Raffles Place Park, East Coast Beach and Tanjong Beach, joining a list of more than 49,000 places where smoking is banned. These include entertainment outlets, shopping malls, bus stops and common areas in residential buildings.
The extension of the smoking prohibition is part of Singapore’s efforts to clamp down on smoking and tackle second-hand tobacco smoke, the authorities said.

“This next round of implementation is a progressive development from existing measures intended to protect non-smokers who visit these places for recreational activities,” the press release said.

** Australia: One in three vapes sold in Australia contain illegal amounts of banned chemicals
------------------------------------------------------------

** Banned levels of ingredients linked to harmful lung diseases such as 'popcorn lung' have been found in nearly a third of vapes sold in Australia. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) found 31% of the 214 e-cigarettes it analysed had chemical concentrations that exceeded the legal limit.

Those substances included the additives vitamin E acetate and diacetyl, which is widely linked to a rare condition called bronchiolitis obliterans that damages the small airways in the lungs. The disease is nicknamed 'popcorn lung' because diacetyl used to be added to microwave popcorn as a food colouring.

The TGA also found all 190 nicotine vape products it tested broke new labelling rules designed to warn customers of the potential dangers.

Federal legislation introduced last October imposed minimum safety standards for nicotine vapes imported from overseas and made warning labels mandatory. The law also made it illegal to purchase nicotine vapes without a prescription. Prescriptions can only be written by one of 80 authorised prescribers, or by a doctor with approval under the TGA's Special Access Scheme B. Consequently, there are only two ways to obtain nicotine vaping products in Australia; from a pharmacy with a prescription or importing from overseas websites.

The new laws are intended to curb the risk of nicotine vaping uptake in young adults, while also allowing current smokers to access the products for smoking cessation, according to the TGA.
