McDuffie Calls for Budget Investments in
Community-Based Initiatives to Combat Crime and Create a Safe Environment for District Residents and Businesses

Washington, DC – Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie released his FY 2023 budget request letter calling for resources to improve out-of-school time programs for District families impacted by COVID-19, advance Ward 5 constituent priorities, further invest in affordable housing, and developing initiatives where residents, especially our youth, can feel safe living in the District.

“With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the increased concerns about violence, this has been an extremely difficult time for District residents. In 2016, I authored, and the Council unanimously passed the Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results (NEAR) Act to address rising crime in our city,” said Councilember McDuffie. “We must devote every possible resource to hold individuals who commit violent crime accountable and provide greater investments and economic opportunities to residents living in communities plagued by violence.”

In the letter transmitted to the Mayor, Councilmember McDuffie calls for a $60M dollar investment that reinforces the need for street-level and community-based crime prevention initiatives including $25M dollars in recommended grants for mentoring, conflict resolution and workforce development. Additionally, he requests $35M for affordable house and anti-displacement measures, $25M for out-of-school time programs, $53M for transportation and infrastructure, $25M for legacy and small business development, and $30M for key investments to eliminate the racial wealth gap in our city.
