Hi team,
Supporters of voting rights recently won a huge victory when a District Court judge rightly struck down a redistricting plan proposed by the Baltimore County Council.
Their proposed map was a textbook violation of the Voting Rights Act. Councilmembers now have a golden opportunity to craft a map that reflects the rich diversity of Maryland's third-largest jurisdiction.
As a crucial member of my team, I want to hear from you directly:
Team, I have served at the local level, and I have great respect for the challenges that the members of the County Council face on a day-to-day basis. At the same time, civil rights remains the unfinished business of America, and voting is the most fundamental of rights.
Now that the court has struck down this map, the County Council has a chance for a do-over to draw a fair map that allows for more equitable representation, greater civic participation, and will empower Baltimore County to better meet the diverse needs of its diverse residents. Indeed, creating a second Black majority is both a legal and moral imperative – but I want to hear from you:
Thank you for taking a moment to share your voice with me – I am hopeful that the council will take full advantage of this opportunity to draw a map that will empower everyone.
Sincerely,
Tom Perez
