John,
One of my first actions as a Congresswoman was to display the transgender pride flag outside my office. I did so to show the trans community -- which includes friends and family of mine -- that they are seen, heard, and not erased.
We must redouble our efforts toward protecting the rights of transgender Americans. Dangerous misinformation has been amplified by right-wing politicians and media figures, resulting in a disturbing series of state actions all across the country that target the healthcare and well-being of trans youth. I'm particularly disturbed by the recent news out of Texas, where state officials have been directed to investigate parents for child abuse if they allow their children to get gender-affirming treatment.
As a co-chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force (an arm of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus) I'm pushing for federal action to protect trans youth wherever we can. I applaud the steps taken by the Biden administration this week to inform Texas parents of their rights under the law and the resources they can use to report any civil rights violation. And I call again on the Senate to pass the Equality Act -- which will expand protections for gender identity under federal civil rights law and send an important message that our government stands with the trans community.
All of us have a responsibility to speak out for human rights -- and trans rights are human rights. I'm grateful for all the support you've shown me in these battles, and I know I can count on you to stand with me throughout what lies ahead.
Sincerely,
Jennifer
