For me — and millions of women like me — the expiration of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) goes deeper than the usual frustration with partisan obstruction. It's something much more personal.

As a single mom in my early twenties, I survived incidents of domestic violence. I escaped with an order of protection in hand and moved back with my parents. I often battle the stigma of being a survivor, self-doubt, and even some lingering fear. Yet I continue to share because I know I am giving voice to an all-to-common reality that many women experience and struggle to overcome.

It's been more than three years since VAWA expired, and right now critical measures to protect women from domestic abuse, sexual assault, stalking, and more are stalled in Washington gridlock.

Renewing the VAWA would help provide stronger protections for women — and their children — who are going through similar experiences. In addition to renewing safeguards and preventative measures that have saved lives over decades, it would also close an existing loophole that allows abusers to obtain guns that threaten the safety of women and families everywhere.

I want to go to Congress to get this bill passed permanently, once and for all.

In my time as a county legislator, I’ve passed legislation that helps police better evaluate the potential for repeated violence, helps victims gauge the risk of being assaulted again, and keeps guns out of the hands of those who are a threat to others. My legislation has helped empower and protect women, but there’s so much more to be done to tackle this issue.

I fully intend to bring my passion — and everything I've learned from my own personal experience — to Washington, where I will do everything possible to protect women.
