John,

Today marks the anniversary of Bloody Sunday – the day in 1965 when 600 people attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on their way from Selma to Montgomery, only to be met with brutal violence from local and state law enforcement.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the 1960s civil rights movement and the drastic voter suppression tactics that kept Black Americans from exercising their right to vote before the Voting Rights Act was passed.

But what you may not know is that many of these same voter suppression tactics are still being used today.

To stop these tactics, we need federal legislation. Will you be one of the 300 people I need to join me today in calling on Congress to enact meaningful voting rights protections?

Last year alone, 19 states enacted 34 laws restricting the right to vote and 440 voter suppression bills have been introduced in 49 states.

Not to mention, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court continues to gut key provisions of the Voting Rights Act to make it more difficult for people of color to vote.

It’s abhorrent to think that on the 57th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we are still fighting to protect the right to vote for Black Americans.

I remain committed to fighting to protect the right to vote in Congress. Will you join me in urging Congress to pass meaningful voting rights protections by adding your name to my petition today?

In solidarity,
Elaine
