Children need ample food to thrive, learn, and grow inside and outside of the classroom. But millions of children could lose access to healthy meals this summer if Congress does not act NOW to extend child nutrition waivers!
For the past two years, schools and communities have relied on child nutrition waivers to reach and feed children wherever they are. Without immediate action, however, these waivers will soon expire—and children of color will be hit hardest.
Congress has the power to ensure children get the food they need. If the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) waiver authority is not extended past June 30, summer programs like CDF Freedom Schools® may struggle to sustain their operations or be forced to close their doors—and many children will lose access to healthy meals. To make sure children continue to get the food they need, Congress must authorize USDA to grant nationwide nutrition waivers as needed through this summer and the 2022-2023 school year.
The most important action YOU can take today to ensure our children don’t lose access to meals is call your Members of Congress (MOCs) and urge them to act NOW! (Contacting your MOCs via email is also a great way to take action, though in this urgent moment, calling is most effective).
