Before redistricting began, experts were convinced that the 2021-22 cycle would be a repeat of 2011, when Republicans manipulated the maps to disastrous effect:
The Guardian: “Republicans poised to rig the next election by gerrymandering electoral maps (July 2021)”
“‘I'm very worried that we'll have several states, important states, with among the worst gerrymanders in American history,’ said... a law professor at Harvard, who closely studies redistricting.”
But now they're singing a different tune:
The Washington Post: “Surprisingly, there has been a redistricting turnaround” (December 2021)
AP: “Democrats make surprising inroads in redistricting fight” (January 2022)
What changed? The fair redistricting movement – which folks like you helped support – made a difference.
But John – there's much more to do as lawsuits move through the courts and the 2022 elections approach.
So will you keep working alongside us to secure fair redistricting?
