Women today have a right we did not have yesterday, if we are victim of a sexual harassment, we no longer are forced into arbitration with our employer.
John,
This past Thursday, marked a historic day for women in the workplace. At a ceremony in the oval office, President Biden signed into law a bill put forth by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-IL), the Democratic juggernaut who is retiring from the seat I am stepping up to run for this 2022, officially putting an end to the practice of forced arbitration.
The passage of the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act marks a monumental breaktrhough for millions of women in America who are now free from oppressive legal bindings that for too long have suppressed our right to fair legal resolution to workplace misconduct.
What a way to kick off Women’s History Month. Women today have a right we did not have yesterday, if we are victim of a sexual harassment, we no longer are forced into arbitration with our employer.
Women who have signed away their rights to fair legal proceedings through deceitful employment contracts no longer have to live in fear that they are unable to take their employers to court over blatant workplace harassment.
This is not only a victory for the women of the workplace, but a personal victory as well. I spent 18 years of my life working in finance in both New York and in Chicago at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Mid-way through my career a supervisor sexually harassed me, when I brought my experience to my firm’s management I was threatened with being blacklisted from my field and due to arbitration clauses in my contract I was blocked from taking the matter to court to seek legal relief.
Women won’t stand for harassment and belittlement in the workplace anymore and I am grateful for Congresswoman Bustos’s work to enshrine our right to hold workplace abusers accountable in courts of law.
The lawmaking process is two pronged. The first step is getting the legislation passed, the second step is ensuring it is implemented. I look forward to carrying on the torch from Congresswoman Bustos and will fight to ensure that this legislation is implemented to the letter.
