When I got to the Senate in 1992, there had never been anybody that looked anything like me there. A Black woman.

Today, there are no Black women in the U.S. Senate.

I was the first Black woman in the Senate — and the only Black person in the chamber at the time. It took another two decades until Kamala Harris was the second Black woman elected to the Senate.

Representation matters – a lot. We are all better served when our leaders reflect the diversity of our nation. Cheri Beasley is a trailblazer who has broken barriers and worked to uplift people’s voices – especially those who have been left out.

That’s why I’m reaching out to ask you to help us do all that we can to elect Cheri Beasley this fall.

Can you make a $3 donation to Cheri’s campaign to flip North Carolina? We desperately need her voice and perspective in the Senate, but she cannot win without all of us doing our part.

Look, running for the Senate and taking on Washington is not easy — especially for Black women.

Cheri is up against opponents and special interests that have a large Rolodex of people who can write giant checks to fund their campaigns and super PACs.

So Cheri is counting on us to have her back. Her best chance to fight back and win is with the help of a lot of folks like you and me. We can make the difference for her campaign.

So I’m sincerely asking you to make a $3 donation to Cheri’s historic campaign for Senate today. Fundraising is historically one of the biggest challenges Black women running for office face, so our support is critical.

There’s no doubt the challenges ahead are large, but the opportunity is even greater.

And I know that together, we have what it takes to win and elect Cheri.
