John — We have some bad news to follow up with you regarding the United States Postal Service’s fleet contract that we emailed you about a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, Postmaster General DeJoy, a Trump administration holdover, has decided to be a thorn in the side of the Biden administration’s climate goals.
USPS finalized its plans to buy 148,000 new gas-powered delivery vehicles over the next ten years. This directly contradicts President Biden’s executive order to have all federal vehicle purchases be zero-emission by 2035, especially since the USPS has more vehicles than any other government agency.
SEEC has been on the frontlines fighting against USPS’s terrible plans. A few weeks back, SEEC’s leadership sent a letter to Postmaster General DeJoy urging him to change course. We’re dismayed that instead he’s chosen to double down on false statements about his decision not to move the USPS into the 21st century with an all-electric vehicle fleet.
He claimed that he postal service had insufficient funds despite the USPS also claiming its most robust financial outlook in years, and Congress is close to approving a massive overhaul of their finances.
He claimed that an all-electric vehicle fleet could not work for some of the carriers’ routes, even though a Postal Service inspector general found that 96% of postal routes were compatible with electric vehicles.
He claimed that their “environmental impact study” justified this gas-powered fleet purchase, despite the Biden administration calling out the study for utilizing faulty data.
These new delivery trucks would emit nearly 20 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over their projected 20-year life span, roughly equal to the annual emissions of 4.3 million passenger vehicles.
We all know that electric vehicles are a key component to reaching our nation’s carbon emissions goals. It’s vital that we continue the transition to zero-emission vehicles that will clean up our air and help protect us from the climate crisis at every opportunity available.
SEEC Members understand what’s at stake during these delicate times, which is why they’re pushing for sustainable recovery policies that will help support the continued adoption of zero-emission electric vehicles. Chip in to support our SEEC members, who will keep fighting to invest in zero-emission vehicles for a sustainable future. [[link removed]]
