Dear John,

This weekend, I had the opportunity to address the delegates and activists
of the California Democratic Party. My message was simple:

California is make or break in our efforts to keep the House blue. To keep
the Speaker’s gavel out of Kevin McCarthy’s hand. And to keep up our
progress.

There are NINE critical House races in California. Yes, you read that
right, nine races. It's not going to be easy – there are districts
Democrats have to flip, and districts Democrats have to hold. And our
fight to win each of these nine seats is urgent:

* In Southern California, we have TWO critical seats to keep blue — Mike
Levin in San Diego and Katie Porter in Orange County.
* We can flip FOUR seats held by Republicans — by beating Michelle Steel
and Young Kim in Orange County, Mike Garcia in Los Angeles, and Ken
Calvert in the Inland Empire.
* In the Central Valley, there are THREE seats we must win. We can elect
a Democrat to a newly-created district in Modesto. We have to keep
Josh Harder in Congress. And we can beat Republican David Valadao.

I don’t want to sugarcoat it. It won’t be easy. But we can’t afford to
fall short on any of these nine critical races. It could be the difference
between Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Speaker Kevin McCarthy — a man who will do
anything Trump asks of him.

But we’re Democrats. We’re used to hard fights. Nobody has ever handed us
anything. And what’s more, as a Democrat from California, we are used to
leading the nation.

Especially as the Republican Party has descended into madness. Tearing
down the very institutions of our democracy. Enacting new Jim Crow laws
making it harder to vote. Seeking to take away reproductive freedom. And
attacking human rights.

We cannot let them succeed. We will not let them succeed. That’s why I’m
asking for your help today:
