War in Ukraine Leaves 1.5 Million Refugees So Far
From a 60 Minutes story: Late last week, the European Union granted refugees blanket permission to settle in any of the 27 EU nations for up to three years. Those crowding Przemysl are already moving on to shelters in cities farther down the line. Major Wojciech Bakun told us Poland is making room for another historic catastrophe. Scott Pelley: “What happens to the people who have nowhere to go?” Wojciech Bakun: “Oh, we prepare lot of places. I think in Poland we have about 2 million places where every person can stay for long time, not for a few days, for long time, for months or if he or she needs, for years.” Two million is half the refugees the United Nations predicts. Four million would make this Europe’s worst humanitarian disaster since World War II. In an exodus without timetables, how long Ukrainians will have to endure isn’t known. Theirs’s is a future they cannot see. Only one thing is certain. On platform four, another train is coming ( CBS News). Another story notes “ police warn sex trafficking gangs are preying on women and children by luring them with promises of lift and somewhere to live” (Daily Mail). A half million citizens in Mariupol attempt to flee but Russia keeps attacking ( NY Times).

Rep. Gallagher: China Rejects Condemning Russia as They Eye Taiwan
From Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher: “ I think it should serve as a reminder that authoritarian countries with leaders who have no checks and balances like Russia and China and leaders who think human life is cheap can launch invasions that seem impossible for us to imagine. If the Biden Administration is wedded to this approach that they are calling integrated deterrence, which is just liberal code for cutting hard power, I fear deterrence will fail again in a bigger stage which is the conflict over Taiwan.“

Child Care Labor Shortage Leaving Workers at Home
Solution from the left: Get the government to subsidize and pay workers more. From the story: … the child-care industry has suffered from a declining number of workers for years, even before the Covid-19 pandemic, amid low wages and poor benefits. She said the pandemic gave more awareness to the issue, highlighting longstanding problems in the industry. Cindy Lehnhoff, the director of the National Child Care Association, said the child-care industry needs the federal funding to attract workers. “We definitely have to have some government assistance, similar to public school systems, if we want early education and child care to be at its very best,” Ms. Lehnhoff said.
