A dangerous individual is now a Trump-endorsed candidate for Arizona secretary of state -- the position that oversees elections in this critical swing state. If this Big Lie supporter wins, Republicans stealing the 2024 election may not just be theoretical -- it could become reality.
Mark Finchem, the dangerous Q-Anon conspiracy theorist, ultra-right militia group member, and current Arizona state representative insists that his plan to decertify the 2020 election in Arizona still "has options." He even introduced a resolution that named the 2020 election in three Arizona counties "irredeemably compromised."
Now, more than ever, we need leaders who will protect our democracy, not destroy it.
A leading Arizona newspaper says Finchem's resolution "reads like a seven-page laundry list of imagined grievances and debunked conspiracy theories, topped off by a fantasy belief that the Arizona Legislature somehow has the power to decertify the results of the election in Maricopa, Pima and Yuma counties and recall the state’s 2020 presidential electors."
The Washington Post quotes Jena Griswold, the head of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State and Colorado Secretary of State:
"The attacks right now are...about chipping away at confidence and chipping away at the reality of safe and secure elections. And the next time there’s a close election, it will be easier to achieve their goals. That’s what this is all about."
Secretaries of State are the top elections officials in most states. Having Democratic, pro-voter, pro-democracy Secretaries of State is more important than ever.
