The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, did something last week that calls his human decency into question.
- Abbott decreed that widely accepted medical treatments for transgender youth — known as gender-affirming care — will now be classified as “child abuse” in Texas.
- He also threatened criminal penalties for any licensed professionals — including doctors, nurses, and teachers — who fail to report such “abuse.”
- And it’s not just talk. Texas officials have already begun investigating parents for the “crime” of supporting their trans children.
Abbott’s Orwellian, up-is-down redefinition of child abuse jeopardizes the lives of trans youth, threatens to tear families apart, and makes people who work with children choose between doing their jobs or going to jail.
All so Abbott can score points in the Republican Party’s pathetic and barbaric game of “Who’s the Trumpiest?”
We’re not going to waste our time appealing to someone as cynical and cruel as Abbott.
So we are calling on the five most valuable companies headquartered in Texas — Exxon Mobil, AT&T, Oracle, Texas Instruments, and Charles Schwab — to use their considerable influence to demand that Governor Abbott immediately rescind his deranged, inhumane “policy.”
Tell the CEOs of Exxon Mobil, AT&T, Oracle, Texas Instruments, and Charles Schwab:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is attempting to stigmatize transgender adolescents and turn the adults in their lives into criminals and spies. As the CEOs of the most valuable companies in the Lone Star State, you must do everything in your power to force Abbott to rescind his deranged, inhumane “policy.”
Add your name now.
Thank you for taking action.
For justice,
