Like you, I have watched Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in horror.
The amount of human suffering and senseless violence perpetrated by this
madman is nearly incomprehensible. I have also been reflecting on the
broader context, which includes: The world is now frighteningly locked in
a battle to the death between democracy and authoritarianism.
It is a new cold war.
But this time, authoritarian neofascism is not just an external threat. A
version of it has also taken over one of the major political parties in
the United States—and just as we defend democracies across the globe, we
must come together to defend ours here at home, too.
That starts by ensuring that the GOP and its neofascist wing does not
regain control of Congress and is defeated in crucial state elections this
November. For more than 20 years, MoveOn has been proving just how vital
an organization it is when it comes to getting out the vote, defeating the
right wing, and electing strong, progressive leaders who will fight for
all of us—it is one of the reasons I am proud to be a MoveOn member.

When I say that the GOP has been taken over by a neofascist ideology, I
don't mean that it is openly supporting Putin (though some—including
Donald Trump—have), I mean that it has turned its back on democracy and
embraced many of the ideals of authoritarianism.
Republicans have made Trump's Big Lie of a stolen election a central tenet
of their party and have used it as the pretext for passing dozens of
blatantly racist voter suppression laws in states across the country.
They are rallying behind Trump's plan to install cronies as election
officials in key battleground states in an attempt to lay the groundwork
for a full refusal to accept the results of the 2024 election and in turn
install Trump as president.
And they have stopped even pretending to be the party of free speech: They
are banning books from schools and libraries and prohibiting teachers from
teaching accurately about history and America's struggles against racism
and homophobia.
MoveOn is fighting back against all of these threats to democracy:
* Their Creative Lab is creating engaging, viral content and videos
(some of which I've helped make) countering the misinformation spewed
from right-wing media, and their videos have been viewed online
hundreds of millions of times.
* They are running a first-of-its-kind, multimillion-dollar attempt to
stop Trump's efforts to elect antidemocratic cronies as secretaries of
state.
* They are working very strategically to turn out the voters needed to
stop Republicans from winning control of Congress this fall and to
elect strong progressive leaders.
* And they are working around the clock to stop the right-wing book
bans, efforts to ban the teaching of race, and homophobic and
transphobic bills targeting kids and teachers across the country.

Make no mistake. Putin's authoritarian neofascism has rooted itself in
America.
We may be able to prevent Putin's aggression from spreading to the rest of
Europe, but to win a cold civil war inside America will take all of us
locking arms and working together. In the months and years ahead, those of
us who believe in democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and truth must
do everything we can to win back our fellow Americans to these same
overriding values.
