Last week, President Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court. This is an historic nomination – of the 115 justices who have served on the Supreme Court, 108 have been white men.

Jackson would be the first Black woman and first former public defender on the High Court. If confirmed, she would be just the fourth person of color and the sixth woman ever in the court’s entire history.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to conduct confirmation hearings beginning March 21, followed by a full Senate vote. Food & Water Action is joining other progressive groups in calling on the Senate to MOVE QUICKLY with a confirmation.

Judge Jackson is highly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. She’s been confirmed three times by the Senate, all with bipartisan support. Jackson served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for eight-and-a-half years before serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Judge Jackson is deeply dedicated to fighting for democracy and access to justice for all. Her career and time on the federal bench — including her 600 opinions written while on the D.C. District Court — demonstrate her lifelong commitment to civil rights.

It's critical that we have another voice on the court who will not reflexively promote corporate power or block federal efforts to improve people's lives. The Senate must act quickly to prevent further drift of an already overwhelmingly right-wing court by confirming Judge Jackson.

The Supreme Court regularly decides cases that disproportionately impact Black women – deciding the fate of climate protection, the freedom to vote, abortion access, criminal justice and policing, housing policy and LGBTQ+ rights. And the lack of representation on the bench is glaring.

The Senate must confirm Judge Jackson in order to increase representation on the bench.

Additionally, when it comes to protecting the environment, the Supreme Court often has the final say on how laws are implemented and whether agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency can act to protect our air, water and land. Confirming justices and judges who respect democracy and recognize the government’s role in addressing important issues, like protecting people and the planet, has never been more critical.

There is no reason for a “no” vote or delays of any kind for this historic nomination. Take action today: Urge the Senate to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court!
