Friends -
At a time when there's a lot to be discouraged about, here's some really good news. We are making great progress in pushing the U.S. House in a progressive direction.
As a columnist with the Washington Post correctly observed the election results in the Texas primaries on Tuesday were "good news" for progressive Democrats. He wrote; "Progressives did very well in three closely watched congressional races. Greg Casar, a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won a landslide victory in the Democratic primary for the 35th District. Casar received 61 percent of the vote in a four-way race and won every county in the district.
"Jessica Cisneros, a progressive endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), forced Rep. Henry Cuellar into a runoff. ...... A third candidate, Tannya Benavides, also ran as a progressive, which suggests that Cuellar could fall in the May 24 runoff.
State Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a member of the progressive group Our Revolution, also easily topped the field in the open, deep-blue 30th District in the Dallas area.....She narrowly missed winning outright with 48 percent and will be heavily favored in the runoff against Jane Hope Hamilton, who was statewide director for Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.
There it is. In Texas, we stand a strong possibility of electing 3 strong progressives to the U.S. House. Not bad! And don't forget. This is on top of the 7 other progressives we've elected in the last few years.
When I ran for president, I made it clear that our campaign was not just about one person. It was about building a movement and creating a political revolution.Let us also be clear that the progressive agenda we have supported is the agenda of the American people. No matter what two Senators stand in the way of, on issue after issue whether it is health care for all, raising the minimum wage, pay equity for women, making public colleges and universities tuition-free, transforming our energy system, immigration reform, criminal justice reform and many other issues, poll after poll shows the American people are now solidly with us. They want, we want, public policies that represent the needs of all the American people, not just the 1 percent.
We are not only winning the ideological debate, but these victories in Texas show we are also making progress in creating the political movement we need to implement that agenda.
Think about it.
A few years ago, there was no Rashida Tlaib in Congress. There was no Ilhan Omar. No Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. No Cori Bush. No Pramila Jayapal. No Ro Khanna. No Mark Pocan.
Now the Progressive Caucus in the House is one of the strongest and most organized blocs in the chamber. And it is only growing.
In other words, despite what you may read in the corporate media or hear from the “punditry,” the political revolution is gaining momentum. But we still have a long way to go. Jasmine Crockett and Jessica Cisneros still face runoff elections, and it’s critical we help them get across the finish line and into Congress.
So I am asking:
Sisters and Brothers, we live in an unprecedented moment in American history, and we need an unprecedented response. Together – black, white, Latino, Native American, Asian American, women and men, gay and straight, young and old.
Because when we stand together as one people, united, fighting for a progressive agenda, there is nothing, nothing, nothing that we cannot accomplish.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
