October 29, 1929. Black Tuesday. The stock market crashes. Millions of Americans are forced into poverty. Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt has a bold economic vision and builds an unlikely coalition of workers, farmers, and small business owners who elect him to enact a New Deal for America.
Democrats have traditionally held a simple economic message centered around creating prosperity through bold proposals while also being conscientious of budgetary constraints. Good governance, economic responsibility, and extending a hand to working families.
We cannot be distracted by “identity politics” or overly ambitious spending plans that scare away potential voters. I have spent a lot of time traveling around the Eastern Shore and throughout Maryland’s First Congressional District. Voters I meet have no interest in “just another liberal” from the political class who will heedlessly spend their hard-earned money; they want representation that will put small businesses and working people ahead of special interests and big donors. Rural voters just want a piece of the action and the Democratic party has ignored their grievances for too long now.
I am going back to basics. My three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. I support a regulatory environment that is friendly to small businesses and burgeoning entrepreneurs looking to bring the next generation of technology into the rural economy. I support expanding access to broadband dramatically because it would enable people on the Eastern Shore to compete in the 21st century economy. I support legislation that makes it easier for businesses and individuals to tap into the solar energy market, both to protect the environment for our children and to enable these people to tap into a new market of technology.
I support expanding the Affordable Care Act and Medicare because it would reduce the economic burden on families, without running up the deficit to support single payer proposals.
When did the modern Democratic party forget its roots? We are the party of economic prosperity that got us out of the Great Depression and the Great Recession. We’re also the party of fiscal responsibility. The last time we had a balanced budget was under Bill Clinton, a Democrat.
The message has gotten diluted over the past couple of years, but here in Maryland’s First District, I am bringing things back to basics. I’ll bring 30 years of experience in economic development from around the globe to the job. As was the mantra of Clinton’s senior staff, “it’s the economy, stupid.”
And, that sentiment still rings true 30 years later. We have a big month and I would truly appreciate your support in my campaign for Congress. Can you rush in a donation of $30 today? [[link removed]]
