I have been deeply upset in recent days by news of the anti-LGBTQ+ policies being proposed in states like Florida and Texas, with similar legislation in the works in many other states. These policies would cause incalculable harm to LGBTQ+ individuals, including banning discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in schools and requiring teachers to inform parents if their child is a member of the LGTBQ+ community.
As the proud sister of two LGBTQ+ siblings and the proud representative of Hillcrest, the heart of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community, I take attacks on the LGBTQ+ community very seriously.
All members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve to be safe regardless of what state they are in. That’s why I am working to ensure all of our siblings have equal protection under federal law. I’m especially proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, a bill that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation in housing, employment, education, credit, the jury system, and more.
The House passed this landmark piece of legislation with bipartisan support one year ago. All eyes are on the Senate — if the Equality Act passes there, President Biden has promised to sign it into law.
We need to send a unified message to the Senate — that the LGBTQ+ community deserves equal rights and dignity under federal law, and the time to act is now. Will you add your name today to show your support for the Equality Act?
