Did you know that three-fourths of the planet’s lands and two-thirds of its ocean areas have already been significantly altered by human activities? And on our current trajectory we risk losing so much more. Failure to act urgently to protect our lands and waters will put over a million plants and animals at risk of extinction, many within decades.

Fortunately, one of the first actions President Biden took in office was committing to an ambitious conservation goal — protecting 30 percent of our lands, waters, and ocean in this country by 2030 — known as 30x30.

30x30 is a bold commitment to meet the scale of the crises facing climate and nature while ensuring all Americans have access to the outdoors — but it requires immediate action. The Department of the Interior has opened a public comment period on a new plan to guide 30x30, and they want to hear from all those who use and love our lands and waters.

Specifically, the plan must prioritize three things: equitable access and partnerships with local communities, including a larger role for tribes in land management to correct environmental injustices; protecting biodiversity and ecosystem stability; and addressing our climate crisis. Because we’re running out of time.

By creating safe and close-to-home opportunities for all Americans to enjoy the outdoors — no matter where they live — and by protecting the ecosystems we all need to survive, President Biden can help address the dual climate and nature crises and remedy long-running environmental injustices.

With only three years left in their term and eight years left before 2030, the actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration over the next year will determine if the United States meets its conservation goals.
