Ever since Cori became the first Congressperson from the movement in defense of Black lives, she has been leading the call for the Democratic party to finally pass meaningful police reform and reinvest in our communities.
That’s why we were saddened to see President Biden attack our movement during his State of the Union Speech earlier this week.
“The answer is not to defund the police. The answer is to fund the police. Fund them. Fund them!" — President Biden
With all due respect, Mr. President, all our country has done is given more funding to police. And the result? 2021 set a record for fatal police shootings.
Before Cori came to Congress, she co-organized and co-led hundreds of protests in Ferguson in defense of Black lives.
She understands firsthand the pain of police violence — what it’s like to be brutalized just for saying your life matters — and the urgent need to keep our community members safe. She understands that ‘defund the police’ isn’t just a slogan, but an urgent solution to the cycle of police violence that has plagued our communities.
This is why the people of St. Louis voted for Cori and helped topple a 20 year incumbent. Our movement for racial justice is the very reason why we were able to deliver the White House and Congress in 2020.
So when President Biden failed to address racist policing and vowed to dramatically increase police funding instead, we took that personally. That’s why we need your help now, John.
