Friends -
Earlier this week, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a new report.
As you can imagine, the news was devastating.
The IPCC reiterated what we’ve known for years: without significant action, in the years ahead we will continue to see hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, more extreme weather, increased flooding, wider-spread wildfires, and more searing droughts all across the planet.
They emphasized that countries around the world are not doing enough — and not acting quickly enough — to mitigate these disasters, and that we’re ill-prepared to deal with the consequences.
The Chair of the IPCC called the report “a dire warning about the consequences of inaction,” and boldly declared: “Half measures are no longer an option.”
We are in a climate emergency, and our window of opportunity to prevent global catastrophe is rapidly closing. Moreover, we know that it is frontline communities, working families, and the most vulnerable in our society who will bear the brunt of inaction.
But there’s an important fact that the IPCC didn’t mention in their report: All across our country and around the world, our movement fighting for a Green New Deal and climate justice is growing stronger and stronger by the day.
The fact is that all the parts of a climate and jobs deal that will set us on the path to a livable future are right in front of us. It is now up to the Senate to act, and act now. That’s why I’m asking you today:
I’m proud that I was re-elected because of activists and young and working people who rose up to demand that our government take action on climate. It’s time for Democrats to do something with the power and responsibility the American people have entrusted us with, abolish the filibuster, and take bold action to save our planet.
But taking the fight to Big Oil, the fossil fuel and energy lobbyists, and the global status quo is going to require all of us. That’s why it's so important that we're in this together.
Thank you for adding your support today if you can. It’s the honor of my lifetime to be in this fight with you.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
