Hi John,
First and foremost — on behalf of Jamaal and our team — I want to thank you for supporting our campaign and being a part of this progressive movement.
Whether you've voted for Jamaal, donate monthly to our campaign, attend our events, or simply just read our emails, you are an important part of this team, and your support does not go unnoticed. So today, I wanted to share with you a little bit about our February fundraising — and where we need to go from here.
But before I do, I have to ask if you'd be able to make your first $4.50 donation to Jamaal.
Look, we're five days into March, which is the final month in the first quarter of 2022. This quarter is also the last full quarter of fundraising we'll have before our primary election in June. How we do this month will set the tone for how we'll do leading up to the primary election — and it'll determine the kind of message we'll send to our opponents. Please, chip in now:
To start off, I'll be blunt about our February fundraising efforts, John — we hit our goal, but we dramatically fell short. Let me explain:
In February, we set a goal of raising 1,000 contributions over sources like email during our end-of-month fundraising campaign. We ended up with a little over 3,000 contributions — so we exceeded our goal there! — but our total dollars raised didn't meet the levels we were expecting.
What's more, February was a shorter month, so we had fewer days to make up for the deficit. And by supporting other critical sources like Jess Cisneros, Greg Casar, and mutual aid organizing on the ground — we had less time to devote to fundraising for our campaign.
So where does this leave us? I'll start off by being honest with you, John: we're starting March in a less-than-ideal scenario.
And as Jamaal faces the aftermath of redistricting and the reality of two establishment challengers to his seat — we need to make sure that we not only hit every goal from here on out, but that we do our best to exceed it.
The June primary will be here before we know it, and the key to our success — especially with a new district and establishment challengers — is early preparation.
Because unlike Jamaal's establishment challengers who will also be fighting for votes and support in our new district, Jamaal doesn't have the luxury of self-funding our campaign, or writing five-figure checks to himself.
Thank you,
Jesse Guy-Herman, Finance Director
