These refugees are giving up everything to escape the atrocities of war. They’re crossing into other Eastern European countries – more than half of them have gone to Poland.
We know something about welcoming refugees in the 4th District. That’s most apparent in Clarkston, often called “the most diverse square mile in America.” Thousands of refugee families have made Clarkston their home. They have enriched our communities with their heritage, culture, and range of perspectives.
When Vladimir Putin began his invasion of Ukraine, he thought he could knock out the Ukrainian military and occupy the entire country in a matter of days. He miscalculated the resolve of the Ukrainian people. Now that his blitz has failed, Putin appears to be buckling down for a longer war, preparing to bombard cities and civilian infrastructure. He’s continuing to create a humanitarian emergency and a refugee crisis.
