Dear John,
The governor general’s role is completely ceremonial, but it’s getting outrageously expensive and we need your help to cut the waste.
This week, news broke that Governor General Julie Payette’s spending is out of control.
Payette’s assistant, Assunta Di Lorenzo – who earns a taxpayer-funded salary of $226,000 per year – racked up $65,000 in flights, meals and other expenses in just a year and a half, according to journalists at Blacklock’s Reporter.
That’s fifty times more than her predecessor in the same time span!
It gets worse.
Payette spent $649,008 on her swearing-in ceremony. She spent more than $100,000 on music that night. The flowers cost $3,000.
That’s on top of the outrageous policy that allowed former governor general Adrienne Clarkson to soak taxpayers for over $1.1 million with zero transparency – all after she left office!
We need to crack down on the governor generals office wasting taxpayers’ money and here’s where to start: a governor general can’t keep submitting expenses after leaving office.
Please sign our PETITION telling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop wasting taxpayers’ money on expenses for Clarkson or any other former governor general. Just click this link: https://www.taxpayer.com/resource-centre/petitions/petition?tpContentId=186
Trudeau promised to “review” expenses for former governors general. Now there’s a minority government. This is an issue the Bloc, Conservatives and NDP could all push.
We can win this fight and cut waste at the governor general’s office if we all work together: we’re going to flood MP offices with emails and phone calls telling them to fix this.
First, we need to build the team: please get on board by signing the PETITION: https://www.taxpayer.com/resource-centre/petitions/petition?tpContentId=186
Thanks for all you do – it’s making a difference.
- Aaron, Todd, Shannon and the entire CTF team
