The Associated Press reports that in addition to death threats, cyber attacks, disinformation, and ransomware, election officials across the country are increasingly concerned about insider threats and "a wave of candidates for state and local election offices this year who parrot Trump’s false claims about his loss to Democrat Joe Biden."
Michigan's top elections official, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, warns: "Putting them in positions of authority over elections is akin to putting arsonists in charge of a fire department."
To protect our democracy, it is imperative that Democratic, pro-voter, pro-democracy Secretary of State candidates have the resources to defeat Republicans who subscribe to Trump's Big Lie.
While election security experts used to focus mostly on what a volunteer poll worker or part-time employee could do to a polling place or county system, the AP reports that "Now, the potential harm extends to the very foundation of democracy -- conducting fair elections."
The AP continues: "This year, voters in 25 states will elect their state’s chief election official, and several races feature candidates who dispute the outcome of the 2020 presidential contest despite no evidence of widespread fraud or a coordinated scheme to steal the election."
In most states, the chief election official is the Secretary of State. Having Democratic, pro-voter, pro-democracy Secretaries of State is more important than ever.
