Happy Women's History Month! We hope this message finds you well and energized. Can we make some noise for this historic moment? President Joe Biden has officially nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
[link removed] [[link removed]]
What happens next? President Biden will present his nomination to the Senate Judiciary Committee. From there, the committee holds hearings where witnesses present their views. The committee then votes on the nominee and sends their recommendation to the full Senate. The full Senate - all 100 U.S. Senators will then hold debates and will eventually vote to confirm or not confirm Judge Brown Jackson.
The U.S. Supreme Court's decisions will affect all of us and it is important to understand the role you have in electing Senators who will vote for a justice to sit on the highest court in our nation.
Elections have consequences as all 100 U.S. Senators vote to confirm her or not. #CourtsMatter #RepresentationMatters

Six Vacancies, Zero Nominations: Why Empty Seats on Pennsylvania's Federal Courts Are Lingering (Law.com)
Kadida Kenner of The New Pennsylvania Project, a nonprofit pushing to expand voter registration for underrepresented communities, said she is hopeful the pragmatic relationship between Casey and Toomey will continue. But she also noted Toomey’s ultimately successful efforts in 2016 to block former President Barack Obama’s nomination of Rebecca Ross Haywood, who would have become the first Black woman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Democrats are in jeopardy of losing their long-time firewall against new voting restrictions in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin should Republicans who support such curbs win competitive governors' races in those states in November.

The Policy Corner: Affordable Housing
The New Pennslyvania Project out registering voters! [[link removed]]
Lack of affordable housing impacts all Pennsylvanians. Many residents struggle to pay their rent or mortgage as wages have remained stagnant while housing costs have continued to increase.
Housing is the foundation for everything: it is known as a "determinant of health, education and employment"; yet, we don’t prioritize it in Pennsylvania. For every one-hundred families or individuals considered extremely low income (making 30% or less of the area median income) and looking for a place to live, there are only thirty-eight places available that they can afford. That means sixty-two families out of the one hundred are homeless, doubled up, or living in unsafe housing conditions. 70% of extremely low-income Pennsylvanians have to spend more than half of their income on housing with a large portion of that population consisting of working people, most of whom work more than 40 hours per week.
During COVID-19, the largest number of jobs lost have been in sectors of the economy with low wages. Nearly half of all households in Pennsylvania have experienced job income loss with Black and hispanic or latino households disproportionately affected at higher rates.
Living through a global pandemic has only highlighted the systemic inequity of affordable housing in Pennsylvania. Our state legislators represent us as Pennsylvanians and we look to them to create policies that tackle this inequity. Registering to vote and then being sure you vote in every election is critical in making your voice heard on the issues you care about, i.e. affordable housing.
