I’m very happy about Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

She is an exceptional choice, and I’m so ready to celebrate her making history as the first Black woman justice.

As a former public defender, Judge Jackson will bring an invaluable perspective to the Supreme Court. (I’ve been pushing for years to get more judges who’ve worked as public defenders and in the public interest, not just for corporate clients, so this is a big step in the right direction). Plus, she’s already gotten three bipartisan confirmations before — and I’m going to do everything I can to ensure a swift confirmation this time on her behalf.

But, we’re still pushing for more. Understand this: Mitch McConnell has already installed a 6-3 super-majority, so it’s going to take much more than this single nomination to rebalance the Court and prevent Republican extremists from further damaging our democracy.

Voting and abortion rights are hanging by a thread all across the country right now and somehow that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If we don’t take action, the Supreme Court’s right-wing super-majority will continue to threaten basic liberties for decades to come.

It’s time to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court to protect our democracy. Add your name if you agree — and let’s give Judge Jackson at least four more new colleagues. [[link removed]]

Not only does the Constitution give Congress the authority to expand the Supreme Court, but Congress has used that authority seven times before . It’s not new or radical to suggest adding seats.

And the American people see what’s going on here, with public opinion of the Supreme Court recently hitting record lows. Expanding the Supreme Court by four or more seats is a necessary step towards restoring its credibility as an independent institution — one that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and powerful, and not just for far-right extremists.

I believe in an independent judiciary. I also believe in a judiciary that upholds the rule of law — not one that ignores it to promote a deeply unpopular and partisan agenda at odds with the Constitution and the settled rights of our people. And when a court consistently shows that it no longer is bound by the rule of law, Congress must exercise its constitutional authority to fix that court.

Expanding the Supreme Court is our best shot at restoring its integrity and legitimacy. Engraved on the entrance of the Supreme Court is a simple phrase: “Equal Justice Under Law.” Americans deserve a Court committed to that fundamental idea — an idea that matters a whole lot more than keeping the Court set at a number that doesn’t even appear in the Constitution.

Add your name to say you’re in this fight to rebalance the Supreme Court and ready to help defend our democracy from Republican extremists. [[link removed]]

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
