Alaskans,
America and the rest of the freedom-loving world stand with the Ukrainian people in this time of devastating violence and infringement on their sovereignty. As many have seen through images and video in the media, this is a harrowing moment in Europe. Solidarity with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters must be backed with urgent action.
In the past two weeks, I have been pushing several initiatives to undermine Vladimir Putin and his war machine:
- I introduced the Bringing Oligarch Accountability Through Seizure (BOATS) Act. This crucial bill gives us the tools we need to authorize the seizure of any Russian yachts and commercial vessels currently within U.S. waters. My bill has a dual purpose; given the crisis created by Putin's greed and aggression, this legislation permits the U.S. federal government to auction these vessels and all contents inside, with proceeds going toward humanitarian aid efforts offered by NATO member states. - I also authored legislation to impose a ban on all Russian seafood imports. My United States-Russian Federation Seafood Reciprocity Act gives us another tool to restrict Putin’s cash flow and undermine his needless war. To read more about it, click here.
- This week, I helped introduce the Prohibition on Imports of Russian Oil Act. Despite having vast resource wealth right here in Alaska, America purchases more than 700,000 barrels of oil and other petroleum products each day from Russia. This unfortunate truth means that Vladimir Putin and his cronies are using American families as a piggy bank for an illegal war on Ukraine.
