March is Women’s History Month and this time of year always makes me think of New Jersey suffragette Alice Paul, who in 1923 authored the Equal Rights Amendment, a framework for enshrining equal rights for women under the law.
This time also makes me think of my mother, Pattie, who in 1972, the year I was born, saw the ERA finally pass in Congress and sent to the states for ratification.
And it makes me think of my daughters and how, all these years later, the ERA still is not codified in the Constitution.
I want my daughters to have the same opportunities as my sons -- just like my mom hoped for me.
That’s why I’m committed to advancing women’s equality and autonomy. I’ve voted for legislation that would ensure equal pay for equal work, prevent discrimiantion against pregnant workers, and protect reproductive rights in the face of unprecedented threats to Roe v. Wade . And I voted to lift the deadline for ratifying the ERA so we can finally codify equal rights for women.
This Women’s History Month, I’m hoping to gather 1,100 signatures in support of advancing women’s rights and equality. Will you add your name before the end of the day? [[link removed]]
Thank you for all you do,
Mikie
