John,
This week, the UN released a report raising the alarm about the climate threats the world is already facing and the harms that storms, floods, famines and droughts are already wreaking on the world. Meeting our climate goals in 2024, 2030, and beyond isn’t optional, it's essential.
That’s why I joined climate organizers yesterday rallying for investment in enforcing New York City’s Green New Deal building emissions law.

Local Law 97, the building emissions law we passed in 2019, has the potential to decrease NYC emissions substantially, by setting carbon emissions limits for buildings — which are responsible for two-thirds of NYC’s total carbon emissions! That’s why it is imperative that New York City is staffed up to make sure property owners are compliant, but the Mayor's budget released this month didn't include the staff and support needed for implementation.
A budget is a list of priorities, and we must prioritize climate action .

The first set of emissions caps are set to go into effect in 2024 – and to meet that target, we have to get to work now. But the Department of Buildings needs staff to do that work.
Yesterday we called for the budget to fund the staff needed to get to work on enforcing one of the strongest climate laws in the country.
